Published on August 22, 2019, Kenya has initiated talks with Uganda and Tanzania to address the frequent harassment of its fishermen on Lake Victoria.
The move comes as a response to the increased mistreatment of Kenyan fishermen by security forces from neighboring countries, which have imposed strict restrictions on fishing in the lake.
According to Semekiah Mamra, Chairman of the Remba Island Beach Management Unit Network, Kenyan fishermen are frequently arrested and detained by Ugandan authorities for allegedly flouting fishing regulations.
"They confiscated their nets and two boats. We are yet to find out exactly why they were arrested but we believe it could have been because of trespass," Mr. Mamra said.
Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary Ababu Namwamba stated that the government is engaging high-level government officers from Uganda and Tanzania to end the restrictions.
"I am optimistic that the engagement will be supported by the three governments," he said.
Mr. Namwamba emphasized that the movement on the lake should not be restricted, citing the East African Community's regulations that recommend sharing of resources.
