Moi University Ordered to Pay 13 Students KSh 50,000 Each for Graduation Disruption ¶
On August 22, 2019, a court in Eldoret ordered Moi University to pay 13 students KSh 50,000 each for disrupting their graduation ceremony.
The court ruled that the university had unfairly denied the students their graduation rights after failing to publish their names on the graduation list.
According to the court, the university had breached the students' expectations by not publishing their names on the graduation list, thereby denying them their right to graduate.
The university was given 30 days to explain why it failed to publish the students' names on the graduation list.
As a result, the university was ordered to ensure that the students graduate alongside their peers in the next graduation ceremony.
The students had taken the university to court after their efforts to resolve the issue amicably failed.
They accused the university of failing to hold its staff accountable for their actions and for not following the proper procedures before the graduation ceremony.
This is not the first time Moi University has been embroiled in a controversy related to student exams and graduation.
In December 2018, over 300 students staged a protest in Eldoret after they were denied graduation due to lack of required grades.
