South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has been urged by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (Igad) to release the balance of the pledged $100 million to speed up the implementation of the peace agreement.
Published on August 22, 2019, Igad, which brokered the peace agreement, called on President Kiir to be transparent and put in place accountability mechanisms in the use of funds for the implementation of the peace agreement.
The bloc also urged rival leaders President Kiir and Riek Machar to set a face-to-face meeting to resolve outstanding issues.
Despite the government's earlier pledge to release the funds, only $6.5 million had been disbursed for security arrangements between April and July, according to the Reconstituted Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC).
