Today, August 22, 2019, marks the 41st memorial service of Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who passed away on this day in 1978.
President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi, stating that the decision to end public commemorations was reached after consultation with family members.
According to Uhuru, the family will henceforth hold private commemorations, with each member celebrating Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in the manner they remember him.
Uhuru expressed gratitude to former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki for observing the day for 21 and 10 years, respectively.
He called on Kenyans to remember the founding fathers of the nation by taking actions in line with their dreams and aspirations.
