On August 22, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta declared that the 41st anniversary of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's death would be the final public commemoration of his passing.
According to the President, the Kenyatta family had decided to let the event be the last day of remembering their father in a public stage.
"The family of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta has agreed that this is going to be the last celebration of Mzee in this manner," said President Kenyatta. "We shall each celebrate him as we remember him and the manner in which we will be doing our things going forward."
President Kenyatta also thanked former President Daniel Moi and President Mwai Kibaki for their efforts in observing the day over the years.
While the public commemoration has been scrapped, the Kenyatta family plans to find a way to mark the day as a family.
