On August 22, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed a narrative spread by Deputy President William Ruto and his allies, calling for an end to dynasty politics.

Speaking at the 41st memorial of his father, Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President Kenyatta clarified that his statement was not targeted at any politician.

"I don't know if I will be accused of playing politics, I am not. I promise. I have no such intention," he stated.

President Kenyatta emphasized that leadership is not about where one was born, their tribe, or their background, but about a desire to serve and make a difference in people's lives.

His comments come as Deputy President Ruto has popularized the term 'dynasty' to characterize the 2022 presidential race as one between the hustler and dynasties.

Those labeled as dynasties include President Kenyatta, ODM Leader Raila Odinga, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, and Musalia Mudavadi, who is the son of a former powerful Cabinet Minister.
