The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) will conduct the national census from August 24 to 31, 2019. The census will be carried out from house to house, with enumerators appointed by the KNBS visiting households to collect data.

Enumerators will be accompanied by security officers and area administration, and will be identifiable by their official identity cards and reflector jackets. They will collect data on the night of August 24 and will complete the exercise by August 31.

The data collection process is expected to take between 10 to 30 minutes per household, depending on the number of people in the household. People will be counted based on where they will spend the night of August 24 and 25, including employees, visitors, and anyone else in the household.

Enumerators will ask a range of questions, including age, tribe, sex, marital status, education, farming practices, property ownership, and access to computer services. The data will be captured on a tablet, rather than on paper as in previous censuses.

It is mandatory to be counted, and anyone who blocks or boycotts the census risks a fine of Sh 100,000 or one year in jail upon conviction. Preliminary results will be released after three months, with a basic report taking six months to process and the final report released within a year.
