On August 21st, 2019, Francis Wangusi's term as Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) came to an end. In his place, lawyer Mercy Wanjau has been appointed Director General on an interim basis.
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ngene Gituku, Mercy Wanjau will oversee the day-to-day activities at the CA until a substantive Director General is appointed.
Gituku stated that the decision to appoint Mercy Wanjau was made after extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure a seamless continuation of the CA's regulatory mandate.
"As we await the necessary mechanisms to appoint a substantive Director General, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Mercy Wanjau as the acting Director General," Gituku said. "She shall be responsible for coordinating all day-to-day activities of the organization, ensuring that there is no leadership vacuum and that we deliver on our vision of a digitally transformed Nation."
Mercy Wanjau is a commercial lawyer and regulatory expert with over 15 years of experience in designing and harmonizing policy and regulation in the ICT sector. She has worked with the Communications Authority of Kenya as Director of Legal Services and Board Secretary and has served on international secondment at the UN-International Telecommunications Union.
Wangusi, who served as Director General from August 2012, will be remembered for his significant achievements, including the migration of the country from analogue to digital TV broadcasting, the implementation of Mobile Termination Rates, and the establishment of the National Cyber-security Centre.
