Communications Authority Appoints Mercy Wanjau as Acting DG

Francis Wangusi's second term as Director-General of the Communications Authority of Kenya has come to an end, effective August 21, 2019. In his place, Mercy Wanjau has been appointed as Acting Director-General, effective immediately.

Mercy Wanjau is a seasoned commercial lawyer and regulatory expert with over 15 years of experience in the sector. She holds an LLB Hons from the University of Nairobi, an LLM from the University of Cape Town, and a certificate in business administration from Strathmore Business School.

Ms. Wanjau has consulted with top firms, including KPMG South Africa and PriceWaterhouseCoopers Kenya, and has also had a stint in commercial legal practice.

Communications Authority of Kenya chairman Ngene Gituku expressed confidence in Ms. Wanjau's ability to coordinate the duties of the Director-General's office in the interim, pending the appointment of a substantive Director-General.

Mr. Gituku also wished Mr. Wangusi success in his next phase of life and in his future endeavors, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sector, including the transition to digital TV broadcasting and the promotion of digital financial inclusion.

According to Mr. Gituku, the appointment of Ms. Wanjau was made following extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure a seamless continuation of the Communications Authority's regulatory mandate.
