On August 22, 2019, Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja found themselves at the center of a tax evasion scandal. The couple, through their lawyer James Orengo, sought to stop their arrest over alleged Sh14 billion tax fraud.

According to reports, the entrepreneurs spent the night locked in their office in Naivasha as DCI and KRA officers camped at the gate. The move was met with condemnation from Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, who expressed concerns that the onslaught against investors could derail employment and investment opportunities in the county.

Tabitha Karanja had previously attributed her woes to a fight from her competitors after launching the KB Lager. However, the DPP, Noordin Haji, issued an arrest order against the couple for the Sh14 billion tax evasion which dates back to 2015.
