On August 22, 2019, the Botswana Football Association (BFA) announced plans to relegate Premier League clubs that fail to pay their players, bringing the country in line with the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Club Licensing rules.
According to the BFA, this move aims to ensure that clubs adhere to the CAF's regulations, which prioritize fair treatment of players. The decision comes after the Footballers' Union of Botswana reported last season that up to 10 of the 16 teams in the Premier League were unable to regularly pay their players.
