Ruto Allies Counter Matiang'i's Influence in Gusii Region

Internal Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has been consolidating his support in Gusii region by frequently visiting the area and promising to complete stalled development projects.

However, Ruto allies in the region are working to counter Matiang'i's growing influence, which they see as a threat to their own political fortunes.

Before Matiang'i's emergence in the region's political scene, Deputy President William Ruto enjoyed massive support and was seen as the man to watch in 2022.

But Ruto and Matiang'i do not see eye-to-eye, and the DP's camp has been pushing for Matiang'i's removal as a powerful minister in the Uhuru and Jubilee government.

One strategy by Ruto's political attack dogs in the region is to portray Matiang'i as a lone ranger in local politics and not development-oriented.

They are also trying to link him to the ageing Simon Nyachae, who is accused of exploiting the community by grabbing land and being a home guard during the colonial times of his father, Chief Musa Nyandusi.

Former Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma is a key player in Matiang'i's camp, and has openly expressed support for the CS's presidential bid.

Other leaders from Nyamira and Kisii counties, including Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, also want Matiang'i to run for presidency.
