On November 24, 2016, a woman in Thiong'o, Nairobi, claimed her husband, Charles Anyona, attempted to rape her while she slept in their living room.

According to the woman, Teresia Ngina, Anyona forcefully pushed himself on her, but she fought him off. She then screamed for help, and neighbours came to her rescue.

However, Anyona told the court that he did not attempt to rape his wife. He claimed he was asleep in his room that night and his wife refused to join him in bed.

Anyona said he went to talk to her, but she screamed and left. He then left on a motorbike to avoid creating a scene and never saw his wife until the day the police arrested him.

Anyona also claimed that he was arrested while leaving a Christian meeting at St Joseph's Catholic Church, where Ngina was also a member. He was detained for a month without charge at Kilimani police station.

While in the cells, Anyona said he contracted a disease that made him so sick he collapsed and was taken to hospital. He was admitted but claimed his second wife never visited him.

After being discharged, Anyona said he met Ngina in Kangemi and she asked him to pay for a hotel room so that they could iron out their issues. He gave her Sh1,000 to pay for the room, and they settled everything. However, Ngina's relatives would not allow them to withdraw the case.

Senior resident magistrate Barbara Ojoo will make a ruling on the matter on September 25.
