On August 21, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i issued a stern warning to facilities and individuals polluting Kenya's waterways, stating that they would soon face severe consequences.
Dr Matiang'i emphasized that the government would enforce the framework for enforcing environmental regulations once it is finalized by the Ministries of Water and Environment.
"Once we receive the framework of enforcement after the ongoing mapping on waterways and areas where people have been deliberately polluting, we shall move with speed to enforce it without fear or favour," Dr Matiang'i noted.
He urged those responsible for polluting waterways to stop the practice immediately, citing the need for Kenyans to take collective responsibility for keeping their environment clean.
"What money do you need to clean your house or your environment, why do you need someone to pay you to clean where you stay? We are not going to hand over a dirty and polluted country to our children," Dr. Matiang'i asserted.
Dr Matiang'i also highlighted the importance of supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta's greening Kenya campaign and tree planting initiatives, emphasizing that surpassing the 10 percent forest cover by 2022 would require a collective effort.
