The 92nd Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Awards are just around the corner, and the Kenya Film Commission is urging Kenyan filmmakers to submit their feature films for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category.
As an officially recognized industry association by the Academy, the Kenya Film Commission has set up an Oscars Selection Committee to make submissions on behalf of the Kenyan film industry.
According to the Academy's rules, only one film per country can be submitted for consideration, and the selected film will be eligible to compete for the Oscar if it is successful at the Academy stage.
However, it's essential to note that submission from Kenya does not guarantee a nomination.
So, what makes a film eligible for the Best International Feature Film category? The film must have been released for theater screening in Kenya for at least seven consecutive days between October 1, 2018, and September 8, 2019.
Additionally, the film must have been advertised and exploited during its eligibility run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry, and it need not have been released in the United States.
Other requirements include no prior television or Internet transmission or DVD distribution, a predominantly non-English dialogue track with accurate English subtitles, and meeting the technical requirements as stipulated in the Academy's Special Rules and Regulations.
This is a golden opportunity for Kenyan filmmakers to showcase their talents on the world stage and potentially create bigger productions and collaborations.
So, let's seize this opportunity and submit our best films for consideration!
