On August 21, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta expressed gratitude to the African Union's Permanent Representatives' Committee for endorsing Kenya's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from 2020 to 2021.
The endorsement was made during an election held by the AU PRC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Kenya garnered 37 votes against Djibouti's 13.
President Kenyatta called on the rest of the UN member states to support Kenya's candidature during the elections scheduled for June 2020, citing the critical role the UNSC plays in maintaining international peace and security.
Kenya, along with Niger and Tunisia, will be presented by the African Union for the UNSC elections.
President Kenyatta stated, 'I am grateful to the African Union's PRC for the confidence they have shown by endorsing our candidature for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent seat.'
