On the surface, Ruth Matete's story is one of triumph and success. She won the coveted Tusker Project Fame talent show in 2008, backed by East African Breweries Limited (EABL), and went on to pursue her passion for singing. However, beneath the glamour and fame lies a painful and disturbing tale of abuse and neglect.
Matete's early life was marked by turmoil. Born to a mother who was in a high school relationship, she was eventually taken in by her mother's new partner, who turned out to be abusive. Her mother's death just a few months after Matete moved to Nairobi with her biological father only added to her trauma.
When Matete arrived at her father's house, she found that he had already remarried, and his new wife was not welcoming of the blended family. The stepmother's behavior towards Matete was particularly cruel, with the woman beating her regularly whenever she wanted to resolve issues with her.
Matete's father eventually took her in, promising to care for her until she was able to stand on her own two feet. He has kept his promise, and Matete credits him with helping her overcome the challenges she faced in her childhood.
Matete's story serves as a stark reminder that wicked stepmums are still a reality in many households. Her courage in speaking out about her ordeal is a testament to her strength and resilience.
