On a day that saw the top three finishers in the 10,000m race at the Nyayo National Stadium, Agnes Tirop emerged victorious, clocking 31:25.00 to secure a spot at the Doha World Championships set for September 2019.
Reigning World Champion Hellen Obiri crossed the line at 31:25.38, just 0.38 seconds behind Tirop, while Kenya Prisons' Monica Wanjiru finished third in 31:26.22.
The top three broke away from the pack in the last 400m, with Tirop and Obiri leading the charge.
With her sights now set on the global title, Tirop expressed her confidence in her abilities, citing her experience and the strength of the Kenyan team.
"I was very green in the senior race for this specialty in 2017, when I brought home a bronze. Now I can say I have the experience necessary to compete better. We also have a very strong team, with Obiri and Wanjiru, so we can be more optimistic as we go to Doha," Tirop said.
Obiri, who is also the World Cross Country champion, was pleased with her performance and expressed her desire to compete in both the 10,000m and 5,000m events in Doha.
"I have already made the 5,000m team so I will now focus on delivering medals in both races. I have ran in Doha and it is hot, I like running in hot conditions so I think I will do even better there," Obiri said.
