Kenya's Interior CS Fred Matiangi has announced a nationwide closure of all bars and entertainment spots for two days starting Saturday, August 24, to facilitate the national census.
According to Matiangi, the closure is aimed at ensuring that citizens are at home when enumerators arrive to conduct the census.
"We are going to close all our social places especially bars at 5 pm to give you an hour to be home before the enumerators arrive at 6 pm so that they can find you at home," Matiangi said while speaking at Embu Stadium.
Several counties, including Migori and Machakos, have already announced that nightclubs within their areas will remain closed from August 24 to facilitate the census.
Machakos Governor Mutua ordered that bars and joints that predominantly sell alcohol or engage in entertainment be closed from 6 am on Saturday, August 24 until 6 pm on Sunday, August 25.
It remains to be seen whether more counties will also institute and enforce similar directives.
