August 21, 2019, marked a significant milestone for Chef Eric Murabula Odhiambo, the head chef at Kiza Restaurant, who has been at the helm for 11 years. His journey began in humble circumstances, but his passion for African cuisine propelled him to become one of Nairobi's most loved chefs.
"I started out as a cook at a restaurant in Nakuru, where the head chef noticed my interest in making African food and took me under his wing," Chef Eric recalls. He perfected his skills and eventually took over the head chef position when his mentor left the restaurant.
Years later, Chef Eric moved to the newly-opened Kiza Restaurant, where he worked as a waiter. However, fate had other plans. He was given the opportunity to make a popular Nigerian dish, Jollof Rice, for his boss, Mr. Ali Kiza. This chance encounter marked the beginning of his rise to the head chef position.
"When I came to Kiza, I was just a waiter. I served food to a family that was having dinner, and they complained that the food was not up to par. Unbeknownst to me, this was our boss. He later asked for someone who could make a proper dish, and I did it. That's how I slowly rose to the head chef position, which I hold to date," Chef Eric explained.
Kiza Restaurant is renowned for its African dishes, and Chef Eric's culinary skills have made it one of the best places to dine in Nairobi. The restaurant also offers private dining for those seeking a more romantic dinner or lunch date.
Chef Eric shared the recipe for his popular dish, the Princess Kiza, which features the infamous Jollof rice. The dish has become a favorite among customers, and its popularity can be attributed to the combination of flavors and textures.
