On August 21, 2019, musician Joan Cherono, popularly known as Sweet Lady, met a tragic end after being hit on the head with a blunt object in her home in Kamukunji estate, Bomet town.

According to neighbours, Cherono and her boyfriend, a prison warder at Bomet GK prison, had long-standing differences and frequently fought.

The boyfriend is currently being held at Bomet Police Station, where an investigation into the incident has been launched by Bomet Central sub-county police commander Musa Omari.

Cherono was rushed to Longisa County hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, bleeding from the ears.

Her father, Joseph Mosonik, has called for swift investigations, stating that Cherono was one of the family's breadwinners and her death has left a significant impact on the family.

“It's a blow even to her siblings who are still in school,” Mosonik said, adding that the family was not aware of Cherono's relationship with the suspect.

“If they were cohabiting with my daughter we were not aware as a family and that does not justify the murder,” Mosonik said, demanding stern action against the suspect.

Cherono's death has been met with condolences from fellow Kalenjin musicians, including Faith Chepkirui Marende and Cheche, who have called for a speedy investigation into the matter.
