On August 21, 2019, Sudan marked a significant milestone in its journey towards democracy as the sovereign council, a key component of the country's transition to civilian rule, was set to take office.
Four months after the ousting of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir, the council's final composition was agreed upon by generals and protest leaders on Tuesday.
The sovereign council consists of five military officers and six civilians, including two women and one representative from Sudan's Christian minority.
Among those being sworn in is Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan, the outgoing military leader, who will oversee the council for the first 21 months before handing over to a civilian until elections in 2022.
