On Thursday, teachers will gather with their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), for crucial talks on various issues affecting the education sector.

At the center of the discussions will be the progress of the implementation of the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA-2017-2021), which is estimated to cost Sh54 billion and is in its third phase, set to conclude in 2021.

According to TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, the meeting will also focus on the 2021-2025 CBA and medical cover deal, which is set to expire this month.

As part of the medical cover deal, TSC has invited bids for a Sh6 billion scheme that benefits 318,000 teachers and their families. The scheme has been managed by AON Minet since July 1, 2015, with the contract being renewed annually.

Interestingly, TSC initially sought to have the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) run the scheme but has since changed its mind.
