On August 20, 2019, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya announced plans to provide farm inputs to struggling sugarcane farmers in Mumias. Speaking in Matungu sub-county, Mr Oparanya said the farmers would first be registered before receiving the inputs.

According to Oparanya, the county government aims to develop the sugarcane crop to help the struggling Mumias Sugar Company return to high production levels. He noted that the miller would need plenty of cane to achieve this goal.

As part of the agreement between the county administration and the Mumias Sugar Board, the sugar firm and the county government will jointly invest in a 10,000-acre sugar cane farm owned by the miller. This move is expected to revamp sugarcane farming in the region.

Of the five State-owned sugar companies in the country, Mumias Sugar is the worst hit by scarcity of sugar cane. The company has in the past been closed for close to a year due to financial troubles.
