Abby Lee Miller, a renowned dance instructor and star of Lifetime's Dance Moms, has faced her share of challenges, but none as daunting as a cancer diagnosis. In April 2018, Miller was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, along with other health issues such as diabetes and hypothyroidism.
After undergoing an invasive spinal surgery, Miller found herself in a wheelchair, adjusting to a less-mobile lifestyle. However, in a remarkable turn of events, she is currently cancer-free.
Miller's journey with cancer began with a series of dismissive doctor visits, where she was told to ignore her severe neck pain and numb jaw. Undeterred, she continued to advocate for herself, eventually finding the treatment she needed.
Miller's advice to those facing a serious diagnosis is to take control of their health, just as they would for their loved ones. She suggests audio recording doctor visits to process information and to find another doctor if the first one is not listening.
As Miller puts it, 'When you know that there's a pain that's so significant, that is so traumatic, you have to do something about it, you have to find answers.' Her determination and resilience serve as a testament to the importance of self-advocacy in the face of a health crisis.
