Spanish Woman Arrested with Ivory Bangle at JKIA Fined Sh1 Million

On August 20, 2019, a 50-year-old Spanish woman, Pich-Aguilera Maria, was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for being in possession of an ivory bangle.

Ms. Maria was traveling from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania when she was apprehended with the jewelry weighing 0.025 grams.

She pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of a bracelet made of ivory and was fined Sh1 million or a 12-month jail sentence in default.

After paying the fine, Ms. Maria was released and allowed to proceed with her journey to Tanzania.

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) confirmed that the foreigner paid the fine and continued her journey.
