On August 18, 2019, just hours before his tragic death in a car accident, renowned Kenyan musician John DeMathew left a powerful message to the Mt Kenya region and the country's upcoming musicians.

DeMathew, who was also known as the 'Kikuyu Prophet,' had conducted a fundraiser at the Metro Fill club in Thika town for fellow musician Petr Kigia's sons. In an audio recording, he emphasized the importance of unity and humility among musicians, urging them to work together to succeed in life.

He also spoke about the proposed changes to the Kenyan Constitution, which would establish a prime minister's position. DeMathew cautioned against the notion that the seat belonged to ODM leader Raila Odinga, stating that it could be held by any community in Kenya, including central Kenya.

"The new upcoming artistes must humble and unite to grow and learn how to interact with each other so that they can succeed in their later life. In politics, I urge the community not to be deceived that the position of prime minister belongs to ODM party leader Raila Odinga. It can also be taken by any other community and it is good for peaceful coexistence after the presidential election," DeMathew said.

He added that even if Raila Odinga were to hold the prime minister's seat, it would not be a permanent position, and other leaders from different communities would eventually take over.

DeMathew's message was recorded by his friends, who were unaware that it would be his last words. He was jovial and excited in the days leading up to his death, which was a departure from his usual shy nature.

Funeral arrangements are underway, with DeMathew's producer, Thomas Ndegwa, announcing that the musician had about 15 songs planned for release this year. The funeral planning committee has also announced that DeMathew's two wives have agreed to cooperate in giving their husband a dignified send-off.
