Since the adoption of the National Electronic Single Window System in 2012, Kenya has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its trade facilitation processes. The system, which was introduced to reduce the time spent processing documents at the Mombasa port of entry, has seen a significant increase in automation, with processes now standing at 87% compared to 15% seven years ago.

According to Amos Wangora, the Chief Executive Officer of KenTrade, the elimination of cargo inspection at ports of entry has been a major contributor to the country's annual savings of 2.5 billion shillings. This is a result of the implementation of the National Electronic Single Window System, which has streamlined the process of certification, approvals, and permits for importers and exporters.

With 36 government agencies subscribed to the system, the government has been able to save 2.5 billion shillings annually, while also helping other agencies raise revenue generation by up to 50%. The system has been a game-changer for sector players, with stakeholders welcoming the government's move to automate its agencies to the National Electronic Single Window System.

However, in a recent directive, the government has disbanded 26 government agencies, including the Food Crop Directorate, Pyrethrum Board, and Energy Regulatory Commission, among others. Only the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Kenya Bureau of Statistics will remain at the ports of entry.

According to Suleiman Shahbal, the Chairman of KenTrade, the inspection of cargo at ports of entry is an inconvenience for importers and exporters, as it leads to unnecessary re-inspection. This move will save time and money, and stakeholders are optimistic about the economic impact of this move on the country's economy.
