Former world number one Serena Williams is set to kick off her 2020 season at the Auckland Open in January, a tournament she last participated in during the 2017 season.

Williams' return to Auckland serves as a warm-up for the Australian Open, the year's first Grand Slam, which begins on January 20, 2020.

On her last appearance at the Auckland Open in 2017, Williams struggled with 88 unforced errors in windy conditions, ultimately losing to compatriot Madison Brengle, who was ranked 70 places lower.

Williams expressed her desire to win the title, saying, 'Oh man, I want to win that title so bad.'

She also reflected on her past experiences at the tournament, stating, 'I have such amazing memories that are really special to me from Auckland.'

Williams, 37, has been dealing with injuries that have limited her time on court, including back spasms that forced her to retire from the Rogers Cup final in Toronto earlier this month.
