Gor Mahia's Joash Onyango Wins MVP at 2018/2019 KPL Awards

Published on August 20, 2019, Joash Onyango, a defensive stalwart for Gor Mahia, took home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the 2018/2019 KPL season at the Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) awards in Nairobi.

Onyango edged out his former teammate Francis Kahata and Ulinzi stars forward Enosh Ochieng to claim the MVP award, which comes with a cash prize of Sh 1.25 Million.

He also received the Defender of the Year award, with Sony Sugar's Calvin Wasonga coming in second in the same category. For his second achievement, Onyango took home Sh250,000, making him a millionaire.

The awards ceremony recognized outstanding players and coaches in the 2018/2019 KPL season. The winners included:

  • Goalkeeper of the Year: Faruk Shikalo (Bandari/Yanga SC), Justin Ndikumana (Sofapaka FC), and Samuel Odhiambo (Western Stima)
  • Defender of the Year: Joash Onyango (Gor Mahia), Kelvin Wesonga (SoNy Sugar), and Brian Otieno (Bandari FC)
  • Midfielder of the Year: Francis Kahata (Gor Mahia/Simba SC), Abdallah Hassan (Bandari FC), and Cliff Nyakeya (Mathare United/Al Masr)
  • New/Young Player of the Year: David Majak (Tusker FC), Jackson Dwang (Nzoia Sugar), and Daniel Sakari (Kakamega Homeboyz/ Kariobangi Sharks)
  • Golden Boot Award: Enosh Ochieng (Ulinzi Stars), Allan Wanga (Kakamega Homeboyz), and Umaru Kasumba (Sofapaka)
  • Coach of the Year: Hassan Oktay (Gor Mahia), Bernard Mwalala (Bandari), and John Baraza (Sofapaka)
  • SJAK President's award: Dr. Wycliffe Makanga
