Published on August 20, 2019, a month after Safaricom's data breach, the company is now facing multiple lawsuits in Europe for violating data privacy.

One of the first lawsuits was filed by Benedict Kabugi, who accused Safaricom of breaching the privacy of its customers. According to the petition, the data loss may have extended to Europe as well.

Two new lawsuits are expected to be filed in London and Paris, respectively, with over 500 European citizens who reside in Kenya affected by the data breach.

The lawsuits are based on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which specifies how European Union (EU) citizens should be protected even beyond EU borders.

Mr. Kabugi's lawsuit seeks about $100,000 to be paid by the company to each of those impacted by the loss, and the authenticity of the data presented as proof of the breach is yet to be confirmed.
