On August 20, 2019, the Judiciary announced the development and deployment of a Case Tracking System (CTS) to monitor and manage the progress of cases.

Chief Justice David Maraga stated that the system has been used to track over 400,000 ongoing cases in 49 out of 132 Court Stations, with the goal of expanding the system to cover all courts.

Speaking during the annual Judges colloquium in Mombasa, Chief Justice Maraga highlighted the Judiciary's efforts to reduce case backlogs, citing a significant decrease in cases older than five years from 110,000 to 15,278.

He attributed the success to strategies such as service weeks employed by the courts and emphasized the importance of utilizing technology to speed up work.

Justice Maraga also urged judges to benchmark with courts that have achieved significant case backlog reduction to apply the means and methods used in their own courts.

The annual Judges colloquium has become an integral part of the work for judges, providing an opportunity for reflection on past performance and planning for the year ahead.

The theme of this year's colloquium, 'Balancing Judicial Independence and Accountability,' is deeply relevant, with the Chief Justice emphasizing the need for judges to account for the quality and quantity of their work.
