Published on August 20, 2019, a dowry ceremony in Ruirii village, Kieni constituency, Nyeri County, turned tragic after four people died and 67 others fell ill after consuming food at the event.

The food, outsourced from Kitengela in Kajiado County, was served to over 250 guests from Nyeri and Nairobi counties.

Director of Medical Services Nelson Muriu confirmed that residents who attended the ceremony exhibited cholera-like symptoms, including diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pains.

"The patient at Kenyatta National Hospital has tested negative for cholera and is being treated for food poisoning," Dr Muriu said.

Residents started trooping to hospitals on Saturday, and the deaths were confirmed on Monday.

Dr Muriu stated that they were tracing the source of the food and the caterers.

One person is receiving treatment at the Othaya Level IV Hospital, while 67 others are being treated in different health facilities.
