On August 16, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) gazetted November 7, 2019 as the date for the Kibra parliamentary by-election.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of former Member of Parliament Ken Okoth, who passed away on July 26, 2019, after succumbing to cancer.

According to the IEBC, each political party intending to participate in the by-election has until August 26, 2019 to submit names of candidates set to take part in the nominations.

Notably, the Jubilee and Wiper parties have indicated that they will not field a candidate but will support the ODM candidate for the seat.

As of August 19, 2019, more than 20 aspirants from ODM had expressed interest in the seat, with the party planning to meet and pick its preferred candidate.

The campaign period for the by-election is set to commence on September 9, 2019 and end on November 4, 2019, 48 hours before the by-election day.
