On August 20, 2019, the Nation published a story about Corporal Edwin Wekoba, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier who lost his legs in a 2017 blast in Somalia.
Corporal Wekoba, who joined the army in 2009, was driving an armoured personnel carrier (APC) during a mission in Taraka, Somalia, when the vehicle ran over an explosive device.
The blast left Corporal Wekoba with severe injuries, including the loss of both legs. He spent three months in the ICU at the Kenya Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi before being transferred to the general ward.
Despite the challenges he faced, Corporal Wekoba refused to give up. He underwent extensive rehabilitation and eventually learned to live with his new reality.
