On August 19, 2019, Nairobi's City Hall implemented a two-hour parking limit for public service vehicles in a bid to stop illegal trading and traffic congestion.
According to a public notice issued by County Transport Executive Hitan Majevdia, matatus that fail to comply with the order will be impounded and fined.
The move aims to curb the use of bus parks as garages, parking yards, car-wash facilities, and holding grounds for unlicensed vehicles.
Matatus pay varying monthly parking fees, ranging from Sh5,000 for a 14-seater to Sh10,000 for buses, and Sh8,000 for minibuses.
Some business owners have viewed the fees as a cheaper alternative to leasing space for activities like car parks, washing bays, and garages.
City Hall has highlighted the congestion caused by these illegal activities, which have led to traffic jams in roads leading to the bus park.
