Published on August 19, 2019, a cholera outbreak has been reported in Nyeri County after four people died and 67 others were hospitalized after eating contaminated food at a dowry ceremony.

The incident occurred at Ruirii village in Kieni constituency, where the food was outsourced from Kitengela in Kajiado County for the event attended by over 250 guests from Nyeri and Nairobi counties.

According to Director of Medical Services Nelson Muriu, residents who attended the ceremony exhibited cholera-like symptoms, including diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pains.

"The patient at KNH has tested negative for cholera and is being treated for food poisoning," Dr. Muriu said.

Residents started trooping to hospitals on Saturday when the symptoms persisted, and the deaths were confirmed on Monday.

Dr. Muriu stated that they were tracing the source of the food and the caterers.

"We have set up a temporary health unit at Kariminu Dispensary to offer medical services as we map out areas that the attendees came from," he added.
