On August 19, 2019, the Kenyan government announced its plan to tax foreign online streaming media services, including YouTube and Netflix, through the ICT ministry.
The two services, considered over-the-top services (OTT), will soon be required to declare the incomes they derive from Kenyan consumers.
Communications Authority director-general Francis Wangusi stated that the country is heading in the direction of implementing policies similar to those in developed countries.
This move is expected to lead to an eventual rise in the price of a subscription to Netflix and a rise in the cost of advertising on YouTube.
