On August 18, 2019, the Nakuru Golf Club celebrated its 90th anniversary with a thrilling All Captains Prize golf tournament. The event, hosted by current captain Hillary Korir, was presented by Menengai Drilling company and Crater Automobile, and attracted a huge field of 124 golfers.
Lawrence Nganga, a member of Thika Sports Club and playing off handicap 21, emerged victorious with a score of 38 stableford points. Nganga's impressive performance included a par-less outward nine, with eight back-to-back bogeys on the par-4 first, second, par-3 fifth, par-4 sixth, seventh, and eighth holes.
However, Nganga's inward nine was not without its challenges. He started off on the wrong footing with a no-return on the par-4 10th hole, but bounced back with a bogey on the par-4 11th hole. He then sank his only pars for the day on the par-4 12th and par-5 13th holes.
Nganga's consistency was put to the test as he dropped shots on the subsequent holes, including a par-4 14th and par-3 15th hole. He then bogeyed the next two holes, a long par-5 16th and a par-3 17th, before inking his best score for the day on the par-5 18th hole, where he sank a birdie to claim victory.
Nganga attributed his win to the course's lush green condition, which enhanced his short-game and gave him an easy time with his chipping. He also credited the rain that interrupted play, which changed the dynamics of play and condition.
Meanwhile, at the par 72 Machakos Sports Club, club chairman Sawarn Singh led by example, winning the Madison Golf day with a score of 39 stableford points. Handicap 33 Nairamas ole-sein won the Ladies gong with a score of 34 stableford points, while MN Kinuthia took home the Guest prize.
