On August 16, 2019, presiding judge Victor Marrero handed down a 25-year prison sentence to Baktash Akasha, a son of notorious Kenyan drug lord Akasha, for his involvement in drug trafficking.

As part of the sentence, Baktash was also ordered to pay a US$100,000 fine.

The judge was satisfied with the evidence presented, which showed Baktash's heavy involvement in the exportation of tonnes of heroin to the United States, as well as other crimes related to weapons handling and obstruction.

Baktash pleaded guilty to the charges and agreed to a plea-bargain with the office of the Manhattan district attorney.

His younger brother, Ibrahim Akasha, is set to face a similar sentence in November 2019.
