On August 16, 2019, a Nairobi court delivered a guilty verdict in the gang rape case of Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba, handing them a 15-year jail sentence.
Magistrate Martha Mutuku declined to grant the two a non-custodial sentence, citing that they were young and breadwinners in their respective families.
Wanyama and Olaba were found guilty of gang raping a woman at her apartment in Nairobi's Higiri Estate on her birthday in February 2019.
"I hereby find as follows after considering the mitigation. That a custodial sentence appropriate in this case," Magistrate Mutuku declared.
