Published on August 19, 2019, USM Alger, Gor Mahia's probable opponents in the first round of the Caf Africa Champions League, announced their intent to pull out of the tournament due to financial constraints.

The Algerian side, who defeated Niger's AS SONIDEP 2-1 in the opening round clash of the preliminary phase in Niamey, cited financial difficulties as the reason for their withdrawal.

According to a statement by the team, 'It is important to know that the situation of USMA has not improved and that it may put the club in a position that will force it to withdraw from the Caf Champions League in case of qualification.'

For Gor Mahia, this development could be a significant boost as they look to secure a spot in the Champions League group stage for the first time ever.

However, the Kenyan champions must first get past Burundi's Aigle Noir in the return leg clash of the preliminary phase in Nairobi this coming weekend.

Qualification to the Champions League group stage will guarantee Gor Mahia Sh58 million in prize money.
