On August 19, 2019, the music world was shocked by the news of John De Mathew's death, a beloved artiste who had captured the hearts of many with his unique voice and style.
De Mathew's journey to stardom was not an easy one. Born to Mathew and Wanjiku, he began his music career in class 7, releasing his first single, 'Jenifer', in December 1986.
Despite facing financial struggles, De Mathew persevered, selling vegetables at Nairobi's Soko Mjinga market, meat in Kariobangi, and even plastic shoes in Nakuru. However, his true passion remained music, and he went on to release 375 songs and 50 albums.
Some of his most popular songs include 'My Dear Nduku' and 'Njata Yakwa', which he performed with the current Murang'a Women Rep, Sabina Wanjiru Chege.
De Mathew's life was not without controversy, as he was one of three Kikuyu musicians arrested and charged with hate speech in July 2012, alongside John Muigai alias Muigai wa Njoroge and Mark Kamande wa Kioi.
He leaves behind three children and a legacy that continues to inspire and entertain.
