On August 19, 2019, Nairobi businessman Humphrey Kariuki appeared at the Milimani Law Courts to answer tax evasion charges worth over Sh41 billion.
He was granted Sh10m cash bail, allowing him to temporarily avoid prosecution.
As the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had gathered enough evidence to prosecute, Humphrey Kariuki and 10 others, including directors of Wow beverages and Africa Spirits, faced serious allegations.

Janus Continental Group, chaired by Humphrey Kariuki, has since announced that he has stepped down as chair of the board in light of the investigation process.
