On August 19, 2019, a significant arrest was made at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, marking another step in the fight against wildlife trafficking.
A 50-year-old Spanish national, Pich-Aguilera Maria, was apprehended on Sunday night after she was found in possession of an ivory bangle weighing 0.025g.
According to reports, Maria was traveling from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam by Precision Air when she was detained.
Her arrest comes on the heels of a similar incident just a week prior, where a Frenchwoman, Laazibi Amal, was fined Sh1 million for possessing an ivory bangle weighing 0.85 grams at the same airport.
Amal had been heading to Dzaoudzi Island from France through JKIA when she was detained.
As a result of her alleged offense, Maria faces a one-year jail sentence or a Sh1 million fine for possession of an animal trophy.
