On August 18, 2019, a devastating fuel tanker explosion occurred in Kyambura trading centre, Rubirizi District, western Uganda, claiming the lives of at least 10 people and leaving dozens unaccounted for.
The incident happened when the driver of the fuel truck lost control and rammed into two commuter taxis parked on the roadside, before bursting into flames.
According to witness accounts and initial investigations, the fire started from charcoal stoves owned by roadside vendors at the trading centre, spreading to dozens of houses and shops.
Approximately 40 retail and wholesale shops were burnt down in the disaster, with the town's residents, including Mr. Onesmus Nkesiga, losing goods worth Ush20 million (approximately $5,600).
Firefighters arrived at the scene almost an hour later, saving some items from several shops.
