On August 19, 2019, Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge cautioned Kenyans to be on the lookout for counterfeit new currency notes during an awareness campaign in Kwale County.
The new currency was introduced on June 1, 2019, to combat counterfeiting, illicit financial flows, and money laundering.
"The public should be vigilant to avoid becoming victims of counterfeit money," Dr Njoroge advised, urging Kenyans to familiarize themselves with the unique features of the new currency.
As the deadline for the old 1000-shilling banknotes approaches, Dr Njoroge noted that the return of these notes has been underwhelming, with the old notes expected to cease circulation in the Kenyan market from October 1, 2019.
