On August 18, 2019, the management of Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) was put under the spotlight for allegedly organizing an expensive foreign trip to receive an award.

The trip, which cost Sh10 million, saw KICC CEO Nana Gecaga and a 20-man delegation travel to Mauritius to receive an award in the 26th Annual World Travel Award (WTA).

According to reports, each member of the delegation received a hefty allowance, with KICC board members pocketing Sh583,900 for the four-day trip. Staff members, on the other hand, received between Sh300,850 and Sh386,250 depending on their rank.

Ms. Gecaga, who is President Kenyatta's niece, spent a total of Sh776,500, including Sh277,800 in allowances, Sh398,700 on air ticket (business class), and Sh100,000 in entertainment allowance.

Parliament's Public Investments Committee (PIC) has called for investigations to establish whether there was value for money in the trip.

“The committee is seized of the matter and is liaising with the Auditor-General to establish whether there was value for the money,” PIC Chairperson Abdulswamad Nassir said.
