Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti has resumed official duties following a four-month absence, attributing his return to recovered vision after a prolonged health struggle.
Awiti, who lost sight in one eye last year, stated he has regained full eyesight and no longer requires assistance from aides to perform his responsibilities. 'I lost my sight but God has given it back to me. I thank everyone who prayed for me,' he said, adding, 'I am now able to see very well and discharge my duties as usual.'
The governor's absence began after he fell ill during an official event in June, leading to hospitalization at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu before being transferred to Nairobi. This occurred two weeks after he returned from a three-month medical leave abroad.
On Thursday, Awiti presided over the swearing-in of County Executive Committee Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Samuel Nyaoke. He addressed critics, stating, 'Whoever is criticized is the one who works. I want to leave a good legacy in Homa Bay. I ask for your support in fulfilling the promises I made during my campaigns.'
During his return, Awiti inspected development projects and issued a direct warning to staff suspected of collaborating with political rivals during his absence. 'If you know you have been leaking secrets of this government for your personal benefit, your days are numbered. You can as well leave before we deal with you,' he cautioned.
Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata and Secretary to the County Isaiah Ogwe managed affairs during Awiti's absence.
