Kenyan artistes have long been underpaid for their performances, with some promoters taking advantage of their low rates. In contrast, Nigerian artistes are known to command higher fees for their gigs.

According to a list from 2019, Nigerian artistes such as P-Square and Davido charge up to KES 5 million for a performance. In comparison, Kenyan artistes like King Kaka and Avril charge significantly less, with fees ranging from KES 100,000 to KES 250,000.
